Toxic Orange Cloud Over Cape Town | Chemical Incident at Montague Gardens

A chemical reaction at an industrial facility in Montague Gardens, Cape Town released toxic orange fumes on January 12, 2026.

The incident involved nitric acid and phosphoric acid mixing in a storage tank at Ecowize, producing nitrogen dioxide gas that was visible across the area.

Emergency responders established safety zones and evacuated nearby premises while hazmat technicians stabilized the situation. Four people received treatment with one hospitalized for burns and respiratory issues.

The vapor cloud dissipated by evening and the area was declared safe with no fatalities reported.
