I'm 35 weeks pregnant. The pressure on my stomach is so painful, and my hips hurt. Is this normal?
You mentioned that you're 35 weeks along, and congratulations on that. You're getting so close! But as babies grow, they do put added pressure in our abdomens and different parts of our body, and it causes us more discomfort. I kind of think that's nature's way of prepping us for delivery, because if we weren't so desperate to get them out, then the thought of delivery would scare us even more. Specifically, you mentioned that you've had hip pain. And a lot of pregnant women experience generalized pelvic pain, especially in their hips because of a hormone called relaxin. It's purpose is to relax the joints of our pelvis, and our body starts to release it during pregnancy. It acts on those joints, it softens them, and allows your pelvis to open up a little bit. And it does that in efforts of increasing the internal diameter of your pelvis so the baby can fit through and be born vaginally. So it's actually you're body trying to help you, although it doesn't feel that way when you're experiencing the pain.
Continue to watch for signs and symptoms of preterm labor, because one of the concerns with pregnant ladies is that they're experiencing pain, they don't know what it is, they don't get checked out because they just write it off as something unconcerning, when in reality it's preterm labor. So if you ever have either intermittent or constant lower abdominal cramping or lower back ache, if you have abdominal tightening and pressure, you feel like you've had an increase in discharge, you have any spotting or bleeding or leaking of fluid - those are all good reasons to go to the hospital and get checked out. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
