Heading into the peak of hurricane season

Tropics update Sept. 8, 2020, 5 a.m. has two tropical storms on the map and two other disturbances.

Tropical Storm Paulette strengthened Monday morning, with Tropical Storm Rene on its heels in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Paulette was named from Tropical Depression 17 that developed Sunday night and is currently located about 1,250 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands in the far eastern Atlantic, according to the National Hurricane Center's latest update.

The storm is moving slowly to the north-northwest at 6 mph.

Tropical Storm Rene, which formed from Tropical Depression 18, is to the east of Tropical Storm Paulette and located about 45 miles east of the Cabo Verde Islands. Maximum sustained winds are at 45 mph as the tropical storm moves west at 14 mph. This general motion with some increase in forward speed is expected over the next few days.

In the meantime, the storm is forecast to become a tropical storm as early as today and potentially a hurricane by Thursday.
