ACTIVE TRAVEL – Are our Communities ready?

A talk on Active Travel with James Murray (Senior Engineer, Waterford City & County Council). Recorded on Monday 21 March 2022.

As part of our response to climate change, we, as a community, need to change the way we travel and reduce travel related carbon emissions. Recently the Government published its Climate Action Plan which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by the year 2030. There are several elements in the plan to achieve this. However, on a local level, it calls for half a million daily journeys to be completed by walking, cycling, or using public transport. This will help achieve a reduction in transport emissions of between 42% and 50%.

We are aiming to make Active Travel become a part of your everyday routine by encouraging short journeys to be taken by sustainable modes of transport, like walking to the shop or school and cycling to work. Creating safe infrastructure is a key part of this process.

The hope is that the opportunity to choose Active Travel over a car journey will become the norm for the majority of local trips and that the opportunity to be part of our climate action will be accessible to all, regardless of ability, age, gender or background.

This event is part of our week long series of online talks: Climate Action - what changes can I make?
