Why Decorate Plastic Bottles in Japan?

Walking down the neighborhoods of Japan, you will often find plastic bottles lined up along the walls of houses or around poles.
What are these for??
They are placed to prevent cats and dogs from coming near.
Light will reflect off the water in the bottles, which the animals don’t like.
Or at least that’s what many people still believe.
However, it seems this was a joke during a radio show on April Fools in the 1980s by a famous gardener in New Zealand.
These plastic bottles kept outside are rather dangerous, how the rounded part collects sunlight like a lens, causing houses to catch fire.
