Does Your Japanese Teacher Say This? I Hope Not…

I’m going to school now to become an official Japanese language instructor. But in class, there is something that I’ve been taught many times to not do as a teacher. It is to ask, “わかりましたか？ Wakarimashitaka?”, meaning, “Did you understand?” during class. This is because even if a student doesn’t actually understand, they could say, “Wakarimashita (I do understand)”

What a teacher needs to do instead is to ask more questions, create roll playing games etc., to really check if they understand. Unless they do so, it is impossible to properly measure the student's true level of understanding, ability, etc. I would say that a teacher who cannot do that is unqualified to be a teacher.
