UNEMPLOYMENT $300 & $400 PER WEEK LWA UPDATE 09/22/2020 (ENDING! NOW WHAT?)

LWA this is the temporary enhanced unemployment benefit enacted by President Donald Trump to replace FPUC until congress can agree to pass some sort of extension of it. All states approved for LWA will receive $300 per week except for Kentucky, West Virginia, Montana and the US territory of Guam (Kansas and Vermont were on the list, now they are saying they won’t be) who have officially announced they will be contributing an additional $100 per week to the LWA program so their unemployed receive $400 per week.

Unemployment was enhanced with FPUC, added additional money weekly on top of your unemployment benefits. It WAS $600 per week until July 31, 2020. It is retroactive so even if you apply now, if you were unemployed due to the pandemic between March and July 31, 2020 you are due an additional $600 per week for every week you were unemployed.

Unemployment was expanded in something called PUA. People who normally did not qualify for unemployment benefits can now be included if they lost work due to the pandemic. This includes independent contractors, the self-employed, hours being cut, and a variety of unique situations that typically didn’t qualify. AND if you are collecting PUA you can collect LWA if you meet the eligibility requirements. For LWA you must be collecting $100 per week from your benefit, during the applicable 3 to 6 weeks after FPUC expired, and some states are enforcing that it is if you lost your job due to the pandemic.

Unemployment was extended in PEUC. Before the pandemic most states would typically provide a maximum of 26 weeks of unemployment, well many of them extended it out to 39 weeks and some states like California its 43 weeks now. AND there is an extension provided in the CARES Act known as PEUC that you can collect after your UI or PUA expires. EVERY STATE IS DIFFERENT on how you apply, or how much you could receive and other details so you will need to check with your state, but this is also available to you as well.

All states have been approved including two U.S. territories, Guam and the US Virgin Islands; while South Dakota is the only state that has said it will not be participating.

Over 30 billion of the 44 billion for LWA funds has already been sent out. FEMA initially only guaranteed 3 weeks of funding; however, FEMA now says you may receive three and up to six weeks of benefits; some will receive more than others it just depends on how quickly your state applied and was able to distribute funds. If your state was approved, according to the memorandum, FEMA should have already provided the funds to the state, you should receive your LWA benefit when your state system is able to disperse funds it is just some states are faster than others at distributing.

The following states have reported funds have been completely exhausted so if your state required recertification and you did not in time yet were eligible these benefits are no longer available to you in the following states: Arizona, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Texas.

Georgia (UPDATE PAID 6 weeks)

Arkansas (UPDATE PAID 2 week, rest in payments)

Virginia (UPDATE website updates underway 9/30, no info on weeks)

Delaware (UPDATE PAID 1 week; 3 more this week; applied for 2 more)

Nevada (UPDATE Mid-Oct, 6 weeks)
