March 1st, 2003. On this day, Roy Jones Jr aka “Captain Hook” who started off as a Middleweight in his debut back in May 1989 attempts to make history by challenging “The Quietman” John Ruiz for his WBA Heavyweight Championship.

Prefight records; Jones 47(38)-1, Ruiz 38(27)-4-1.

Going into the fight, Jones was a 9-5 favorite and considered to be the No. 1 Best Pound for Pound Fighter with only one loss via DQ9 against Montell Griffin which was avenged via 1st round knockout just 5 months later.

Interestingly, Jones gave away 33 pounds in weight as he weighed 193 against Ruiz’s 226. Additionally, Ruiz had a 3" height and 4" reach advantages over the naturally smaller Jones.

Going into the fight, Ruiz had wins over Kirk Johnson & Evander Holyfield.

On the other hand, Jones who was World Champion in 3 weight classes; Middleweight, Super Middleweight & Light Heavyweight had beaten a long list of notable oppositions such as Jorge Fernando Castro, Jorge Vaca, Glenn Wolfe, Thulani Malinga, Thomas Tate, James Toney, Vinny Pazienza, Tony Thornton, Antoine Byrd, Merqui Sosa, Eric Lucas, Virgil Hill, Lou Del Valle, Otis Grant, Reggie Johnson, Richard Hall, Eric Harding, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, Clinton Woods, Bernard Hopkins, Mike McCallum & Montell Griffin.

While most believed Jones’ amazing speed, reflexes and his remarkable athleticism will be too much for the slower Ruiz, but a handful of observers thought Ruiz’s size would be a huge factor. Some predicted a knockout victory for The Quietman.

Nonetheless, the outcome turned out to be as expected by most as Jones largely dominated the fight; outboxing & outfoxing the slower (albeit bigger) Ruiz with dazzling hand speed & boxing skills with the defending world champion having little to no answers.

Ruiz to his credit managed to land a couple of meaningful blows to the body, and a few right hands upstairs. However, he clearly lost most of the rounds as he did not do enough.

Interestingly, Jones who was never known to be a jabber threw and landed more jabs than he ever did.

After 36 minutes, Jones triumphed via scores of 116-112, 117-111 & 118-110. With this victory, Jones achieved the following feats;

1) He became the 2nd World Middleweight Champion to win the World Heavyweight Championship, 106 years since Bob Fitzsimmons when he knocked out James J. Corbett on March 17th 1897.

2) He became the 1st World Middleweight Champion in 2 centuries (20th and 21st) to become World Heavyweight Champion.

3) He is also the 2nd World Light Heavyweight Champion to move up to Heavyweight to win a world title. The 1st was Michael Spinks on September 21st 1985, when he scored a UD15 over Larry Holmes to win the IBF Crown.

4) He is also the 7th boxer in history to win world titles in 4 weight divisions. The first 6 were Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Pernell Whitaker, Oscar De La Hoya & Leo Gamez.

After this victory, Jones opted to vacate the title and move down to Light Heavyweight again to challenge Antonio Tarver for the WBA and WBC Light Heavyweight Titles. After 12 competitive rounds, Jones won a close MD. This win added another feat to his resume; becoming the 1st reigning World Heavyweight Champion in history to move down in weight and won a World Light Heavyweight Title.
