Anthony Hanshaw was an undefeated fighter with a 21(14KO)-0-1 record. In his last outing he fought Jean-Paul Mendy for the IBO World Super Middleweight title but came up short when the fight was declared a draw after 12 rounds. He had not fought anybody else of note and he had never held a title of any kind in his whole 22 fight career. A majority of his 14 KO wins had come within the first 3 rounds but not much else stood out about the near 30 year old fighter.

Roy Jones was attempting a comeback after 12 months out of the ring. He was still looking to redeem himself from a 3 loss streak he suffered during 2004 and 2005 against Antonio Tarver (twice) and Glen Johnson. In his most recent fight the previous year, Roy Jones Jr beat Prince Badi Ajamu, for the NABO Light Heavyweight belt however Roy did not get much credit for the win as Ajamu was completely ineffective and nowhere near the calibre of Roy's former opponents. On paper, Anthony Hanshaw, looked like the guy who could propel Roy Jones back into the light heavyweight limelight... If he could beat him!

The fight as a whole was exciting to watch. Although Roy Jones appeared to have the upper hand throughout, there were times when Hanshaw was able to get through with solid shots but his lack of big time experience was evident. With 1 minute left in round 11, Hanshaw had Roy Jones trapped on the ropes, however in the blink of an eye, vintage Roy Jones returned and landed a lightening quick flurry of uppercuts that turned the tables on his aggressor and put him on the canvas. Although Roy didn't finish him off, the knock down helped solidify a dominant unanimous decision win.

Although Roy Jones Jr would go on to beat a ring rusted Felix Trinidad the following year, he suffered another big setback when he was soundly beaten by exiting super middleweight king, Joe Calzaghe. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 things didn't get any better for the former undisputed World Light Heavyweight champ when he lost to Danny Green, Bernard Hopkins and Denis Lebedev. Roy Jones continues to defy the critics however and is still actively boxing as of writing this (Dec 2015). Although the level of his competition is questionable...

Unfortunately for Hanshaw his career went downhill following this fight. In his very next outing he was KO'd in 5 by Andre Dirrell prompting him to take a break form the sport for almost 4 years. Hanshaw returned in 2012 and picked up a couple easy wins against no name fighters before drawing with Derek Edwards in early 2013. He lost a decision to Farah Ennis in June of 2013 and was KO'd in 3 rounds just over 1 month later by Anthony Dirrell, younger brother of Andre Dirrell. Following this loss, Anthony Hanshaw retired from boxing with a 23-4-2 record.
