Does Black History Month create racism?

For years I have had so much anxiety about February...Black History Month is supposed to be a time where my African American children feel confident and empowered by their history, right? Then why do I spend most of the month running interference on messaging about racial and economic hierarchies in America?

I spend so much energy trying to protect my children's self-concept against the over-simplified and developmentally-inappropriate messages of Black History month...I just wonder if there isn't a more constructive way to do this?
