Dancing on the Greek Bridge of İkizdere – Macedonian Greek collection

Description: This clip provides insights into the musical repertoire of the Vallahades or Patriyots in Turkey. This group of Greek-speaking Muslims was expelled from Greek West Macedonia to Turkey in the early 1920s. They play their traditional music on the clarinet and davul and usually perform at weddings and circumcision ceremonies. The Sarıkaya family from İncirliova meets their friend, Doğan Batıray from Mursallı, and they spontaneously decide to show us some traditional Vallahades dances. The meeting took place on a caravan bridge close to the city of İncirliova (Aydın, Turkey), usually referred to as İkizdere Bridge in historical texts, and commonly known as the Greek Bridge. It is currently being restored (2022-24). Most of their dance melodies are well known in Greece. In some cases, the names of the songs used by the Vallahades in Greece refer to slightly different melodies and rhythms. Their songs have been included in the repertoire of the Turkish and Roma bands in the region. The melodies presented are:
