Horacio Borromeo:
"The music was indeed "composed" by Ben Zubiri but the original score was written (put into sheet music) by Emilio Villarreal, pianist of DYRC in Cebu. Young Ben Zubiri was an admirer of the local belle, Lily Filoteo, whose father was a prominent doctor in Cebu. Ben, being an illegitimate child, was not encouraged by his friends to pursue the object of his affections. Recognizing the disparity in social status, he was moved to compose "Matud Nila" and dedicated the song to Lily. Journalist Delia Jurado wrote this story of Matud Nila in the obituary of Lirio "Lily" Filoteo Ferreros, who passed away on July 15, 1996. In 1973, I brought Joe Valdez to Iloilo and Cebu to perform at the local universities. In Cebu, I brought him with me when I visited my mother-in-law in Banawa. As we were on our way to rehearsal, Joe had his guitar with him. So my mother-in-law asked him to play that most Cebuano of Cebuano songs, Matud Nila. Joe had not played it before, but ever the trouper, he did an impromptu rendition from his mental familiarity with the melody. It made my mother-in-law very happy. And I never told Joe until years later that he had played Matud Nila for the very same woman who had inspired the composer and the song."
