Why Self-Compassion Is More Than Just Being Nice to Yourself

After returning from the Big 12 Deans & Directors Convening at BYU, I found myself reflecting on one of the most powerful definitions of self-compassion I’ve heard in a long time.

As therapists, we often define compassion as recognizing the suffering of others and committing ourselves to alleviating it. But what happens when we apply that same definition inward?

In this video, I talk about why self-compassion is not simply positive self-talk or “being nice” to ourselves—it’s the intentional process of recognizing our own distress and taking meaningful action to care for it.

Whether you’re a student, professional, therapist, educator, or simply someone navigating stress and change, I hope this perspective is helpful.
