Government Center - Alex Chilton sings Jonathan Richman 2007 & 1977
Here are two versions of Jonathan Richman's "Government Center" sung by Alex Chilton. He played this song in the late 1970s in New York City with the band he dubbed "The Cossacks", and the second version here was supposedly recorded at the Ocean Club on April 19, 1977 with Lloyd Fonoroff on drums and Chris Stamey on bass.
He didn't play this song much (if at all) during the years he toured frequently as a solo artist (late 1984-2001 or so), but he joined Yo La Tengo on December 8, 2007 (Hanukkah, night 5) at Maxwell's, in Hoboken, NJ, for several encores after YLT had played a set, and "Government Center" was one of the tunes he sang. The 2007 version is on Youtube elsewhere; I've done a couple of nip and tuck edits on the file you hear here.
Jonathan Richman recorded several great versions of this tune and I like them all.
