BobBlast 324 - "Paint Sketching and Collage Combo"
Welcome back to another BobBlast
Spontaneous brush work and large paper shapes begin this thrilling day in the studio for me! First, my intention is to approach this painting as a mad scientist who discovers make-believe whimsey. The only concept is to be curious while making a new painting with strong graphic design and color. And, that's it! I have no higher intention.
For this BobBlast, my materials are paper scraps, acrylic gel medium (your glue), Holbein heavy body Acrylic Paint and a painting surface - such as a canvas, 300 lb watercolor paper or a wood panel. The surface in my demo is a Cheap Joe's Prime Extra Fine Art Board, 16x16 inches.
Step One: The concept is to make a new painting with strong visual impact, using only paper collage and paint.
Step Two: Trowel acrylic gesso all over the surface with a disposable cardboard spreader or use a wide brush. Let dry.
Step Three: Working quickly, spread lots of acrylic gel medium over the entire surface. Then, begin adhering large collage paper shapes, randomly on the surface. Flatten out the wet paper and scrape the excess gel medium. You can use another cardboard spreader, a rolling brayer or one of those silicon brayers. This will also get rid of any air bubbles.
Step Four: Now add color. I begin painting all over the surface, using a 2 inch or wider brush. Enthusiasm and curiosity is essential! Don't forget a focal point. Mine is a small spot of red paper...
The intent is to develop personal confidence as a painter. Make lots of these paintings.
LOTS OF MANY!
