BobBlast 311 - "It’s Hip to be Square"
BobBlast 311
It’s Hip to be Square
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
Previous BobBlasts featured the importance of practicing drawing basic shapes: Circles and Triangles. So now, this week's BobBlast features another shape… The SQUARE; plus that other shape, the Rectangle, which is two squares, stacked. This information is a part of any drawing lesson. Great to practice and incorporate into your paintings.
Here's a quick lesson about squares - view the video for a simple assignment. Paint multiple black and white squares, add monochromatic color! Looking at this basic shape, I can envision a coffee cup. It's a square - no curves or ovals - a simple square plus a half-circle for the handle. Paint lots of loose abstract versions. Keep it simple!
Looking at a complex still life, I see geometric shapes: Squares, rectangles, circles and triangles. These shapes are the foundations of the wine bottle, cup, pears. So when I start to paint a bottle, I am working with three simple shapes:
•Tall Rectangle (stacked squares) for the body
•Narrow Rectangle for the neck
•Small Square for the top
Next, I curve the bottle "shoulders" and add a radius for the bottom. Watch the video to see me paint a wine bottle. During the demo - I also show a cool product - the Big Squeeze, available through Vermont Art Supply… really good when you want to squeeze the last drop of paint out of a tube!
Keep practicing these basic shapes - This is your time to paint freer, wetter and looser! So, are we square?
See Bob in action! Dillman's FaceBook Live - Wednesday June 17, 3pm CST
New Virtual Exhibit - Juried Show with $1,500 in awards
More info coming! Sponsors, great juror, cool theme!
