Make it Bigger!

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

We’re back in Art School with this week’s BobBlast with this grade-school engineering reminder! When you want to enlarge your small sketch into a larger painting, this quick technique can help you.

In this BobBlast, I place a small sketch and proportionally enlarge it on a larger format. Let me first address the idea of “sketches” - I also call them my daily warmup exercises. In previous BobBlasts you have seen examples: When I first get into my studio, I like to warmup and get into my daily activity by painting at least 6 little paintings. I line up the same size of paper (10x10, 6x9 or 9x12) - I have a concept for all six (Like Flowers in a vase) - the composition and color combinations are the same for all six. I work quickly. I am warming up.

Sometimes these paintings really turn out great and I would like to paint them again… LARGER! The simple way to work on enlarging your sketch is to place the small painting in the bottom left hand corner of your larger paper or canvas… then, draw a line from the left bottom corner up to the top right corner. It is a simple technique and very do-able!

Watch the video to see exactly how I do this and how I start to paint it bigger! Along the bottom of my larger surface, I draw a straight line up to the diagonal line. At that point, my line turns left. The larger surface will be proportionally correct to your smaller painting.
