Physicians and medical trainees who desire to have children are faced with difficult family planning decisions, often with very little institutional support. These choices disproportionally affect women, as evidenced by the higher rates of reported infertility amongst female physicians compared to the national average. It is time to discuss how family planning is affecting careers in medicine and how we, as a profession, can best support physicians on their journey to have both a medical career and children. Dr. Guidry is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Trauma & Critical Care from Cut Off, Louisiana. Being a member of the medical trauma field, Dr. Guidry offers her take on family planning and its integration within the medical profession.
