Dr. Mark Shrime starts with a brief overview of what work looks like these days—and the science behind why people are fleeing it. He then weaves literature, decision science, American Ninja Warrior, and his own story as a surgeon who never wanted to be a doctor in the first place, into three concrete steps for anyone to follow in constructing a life of purpose, meaning, and deep contentment. Mark brings to this topic deeply personal experience, which he combines with PhD-level training in the science of decision-making, and sixteen years of working as a surgeon on a hospital ship docked off coastal West Africa. Dr. Mark G. Shrime is the International Chief Medical Officer at Mercy Ships and a Lecturer in Global Health and Social Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. He is the author of Solving for Why: A Surgeon's Journey to Discover the Transformative Power of Purpose.

He previously served as the O’Brien Chair of Global Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and as Research Director for the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard.

He has spoken at the United Nations, WHO, Harvard, Princeton, and around the world addressing how to find career purpose and moral injury in the healthcare workforce, in addition to issues around healthcare inequity and the non-health outcomes of health policies.

He spent 14 years in Boston and now calls New York City home. When he’s not working, Dr. Mark is an avid rock climber and photographer, and he competed on Seasons 8, 9, and 11 of American Ninja Warrior.
