"The Future of Flight: Solar Aircraft Designed to Stay Airborne for a Year"
New solar-powered aircraft are being developed with the potential to stay airborne for up to a year. One notable example is the PHASA-35, developed by BAE Systems and Prismatic, designed to fly at altitudes up to 70,000 feet and potentially remain in the air for 12 months using solar energy by day and batteries at night. Other aircraft, like the Airbus Zephyr, have already demonstrated flights lasting over 18 days and are intended for up to six months of continuous operation, while the Skydweller, evolved from Solar Impulse 2, and Aurora Odysseus are being developed to fly for months at a time. These high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) drones act as “pseudo-satellites” and are ideal for telecommunications, surveillance, atmospheric research, and disaster response, offering a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to satellites.
