The Story behind Santa Chuva - Maria Rita

The song is a conversation between two lovers. There's a dual going on. Maria first standing in a blue spotlight to play the part of the man and then moving over to a red spotlight to play the part of the woman. Watch for these spotlights as the song progresses.

The following recaps her conversation:

THE MAN SAYS: "Who are you to call me here when nothing's happened?"

Maria relates that the song really reached her when it says:

"Which saint is going to fight for you?" . . . which to her is something . . . she saw the image - with all the intensity happening there . . .

And the notion of a saint . . . people kneeling down and asking for protection

But as the saint wouldn't fight for him, it made her think:

"What did this person do to cause such a revolt, even for a saint?"

She identified with the story . . . especial with the woman. She recalls being taken by such anger, a pretty strong feeling when recording -- which made things difficult.

She relates: "I clearly remember singing and staring at the wall . . . screaming and getting to that thin line between singing with emotion and screaming desperation. This is great for me -- like this emotional cleansing. I remember the emotion and the difficulty I felt, and Tom's (Capone) presence saying: "No it's good, go on . . ."

"That night I recorded this take and many other tracks that were good on the first take. Tom would say: "It's a shame that this story is kind of silly, like you telling that you finished eight takes in one night."

Rita said to him, "Yes, it's really silly -- I won't tell." (But she did!)

She further relates: "Then we began to put the show together. The notion of how it sounds like a movie returned, and I kept thinking of how to bring that to the stage. I thought of adding a hat to make me look like a guy, then throwing the hat off and finally . . . I chose to go for the dual of lighting: blue on the left side of the stage, red on the right side, and a podium to allow for free movement. It's the most theatrical moment of the show.

Maria Rita is the daughter of one of Brazil's most legendary vocalists, the late Elis Regina, and if that alone weren't enough to make her a star-in-waiting, her father is César Camargo Mariano, one of the country's top arrangers, producers, and pianists.
