Free Press in the USSR? #news #history #foxnews #usa #us

We’re told there was “no free press” in the USSR. What does that freedom mean and for whom?

Under capitalism, press freedom means capitalists own and use media outlets. Bad news won’t mention investors and advertisers. Protests are framed as unprovoked chaos. The press exists not to inform, but to promote narratives convenient to the class that owns them.

For example, Rupert Murdoch owns 60% of the press in Australia and 30% of it in the UK, along with the infamous Fox News.

In comparison, the USSR built an actual informative tool for the working class. They raised literacy to universal levels and funded worker managed media. From factory wall-newspapers to national papers and radio, workplaces and organisations had platforms for debate and criticism.

In the 1920s, women openly debated civil marriage and divorce laws through the press. During the NEP and later, workers used newspapers to criticise management and product quality. Many Western stories about Soviet “corruption” are in fact based on these critiques.

Capital needs a tool for promoting business and selling scandals. The workers need a political tool to discuss, criticise, and organise as the Soviet press was.
