Nowadays, the number of conflicts is rising. They always end in uncertainty, decided by negotiations behind the curtains. But a century ago, the Bolsheviks managed to drive Russia out of the greatest war in just a few months. How did they do this?

To begin, they exposed the deception. After October, they published the treaties between the Tsar and the Western Allies. Millions more people realised that each side was imperialist. It was not a war defending “democracy” or the nation, but for the division of colonies, straits, and spoils.

Secondly, the Bolsheviks didn’t forsake their principles. They maintained that the greatest enemy of the workers was at home – “their own” capitalists. They aimed to turn the war into civil war. “Peace, Bread, Land” rallied soldiers, workers and peasants. The Workers’ Councils took power from parliament and issued the Decree on Peace.

They chose peace even at a brutal price in land, indemnities and resources. In 1918, Brest-Litovsk pulled Russia out; cracking the war coalition.

Imperialist wars won’t end through fine speeches. Only socialism can stop imperialist bloodshed.
