The Eberspacher D1L is still a powerful little heater that gives out 1,800 watts of heat.

That is the same output as the later D1LC, although air flow is a little less.

Even the later 2.2kw D1LC compact and D2 heaters will only give that extra heat out on the short boost period and will then drop back to 1.8kw on full power.

The later heaters are more controllable as they are able to slow down and as a result have a range of heat modes from 0.85kw up to maximum.

The D1L and other early heaters are either on or off, but the temperature can be controlled via a normal bimetallic room thermostat that you find with normal household domestic central heating systems.

Simply wire in an on/off switch before the thermostat. Then take the yellow wire in and out of the room stat. Set the temperature and that will turn the heater on and off automatically to maintain your setting.

When buying one of these heaters, please make sure it does not give out white smoke when running!

That is a bad sign and will more than likely mean the combustion chamber flame tube has burnt out. That part is not replaceable and you will require a full combustion chamber.

Please remember all 24v Glow plug heaters draw over 19 Amps on start up and relights. This drops to just a couple of amps when the heater is running.

People often see and quote the label power rating. That is running power after the glow plug has turned off! So 50 watts on a 24v label is 2 amps!

They then go and buy a 5 Amp inverter after some stupid seller has pointed to a £15 one and it blows in a short time!

A 20 Amp inverter will cost you just under £200 on eBay and to be honest! Even that may blow in time because the surge power will go above 20amps!
