"Slow motion time lapse" of satellite images of Earth taken from geostationary orbit, 35786 kilometres (22236 miles) above the planet. 1 second of video = 1 hour of realtime. Source images are ~11000 pixels in size. Interval between images is 10 minutes. The images are played back at 24 fps, at 25% speed using AI-based frame interpolation. If you notice any unnatural cloud movements, they are the result of my slow-mo processing. There are also gaps in the data which result in a "jumpy" video sequence - sometimes on a recurring daily basis, and sometimes whole date ranges are missing. This stream plays one random month from one random satellite at a time, each of which lasts around 10-12 minutes. New videos will be added regularly as I render them.
Accumulating and processing the images for this has been a labor of love for me since 2019. The raw image data takes up many terabytes of space (14 TB as of Jan 2022), and I've had to purchase multiple external hard drives to store it all. I wrote scripts and scheduled tasks to download the images daily. Then I have to process each month's images into a series of videos, and apply the slow-mo interpolation. Even NOAA doesn't persistently store their own GOES GeoColor images; they only retain them for a few days, after which they are deleted forever - so I have to make sure I get all images downloaded while they're still available.
