Can the US exclude South Africa from the G20 summit 2026?

The US is hosting the G20 ‘Sherpas’ meeting to start planning the summit’s agenda for the year to come. Washington has recently assumed the group’s 12-month rotating presidency and will hold the summit in December 2026 in Miami. Despite the absence of any formal mechanism for one G20 member to exclude another, the summit’s last host, South Africa, was not invited to the planning meeting, as well as next year’s gathering. Earlier, the US President boycotted Africa’s first G20, hosted in Johannesburg, citing unfounded allegations that Pretoria persecutes its white Afrikaner minority. So, what is behind South Africa’s exclusion from the summit? And what consequences will it have for the future of the G20?
