Is Trump eyeing a better deal than the JCPOA?

With the future of a second round of talks unclear and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalating, the US and Iran remain locked in a diplomatic stalemate.

After reviewing Iran’s latest 14-point peace plan, President Trump conveyed his response via Pakistan, but said he is highly unlikely to accept it.

The main sticking point in diplomatic efforts remains Iran’s nuclear programme, with Washington seeking to impose stringent restrictions before ending the war.

Iran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes and has signalled a willingness to discuss compromises to reach a deal, as it did under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The agreement aimed at constraining Iran’s nuclear capacity effectively collapsed after President Trump’s unilateral withdrawal in 2018.
