Today I'm going to talk about an above ground pool disaster and how you can avoid it if you're thinking about installing an above ground pool. And I received a call from a very nice lady wanting me to clear up her pool. As I was talking to her, the most incredible, and frustrating thing, happened. Probably the worst thing that can happen to an above ground pool owner. And you guessed it.

The bottom of the pool ruptured, and she lost all 18k gallons of water out of her only 2 week old pool.

I didn't really get good video of the water pouring out of the pool. I thought it might be unprofessional of me to do so, but you can see a side view right here where the water was just pouring out. The pool only took about 10 minutes to fully drain. That how big the hole was.

So after the water drained out about 1/2 way, the pool owner jumped in to see where the hole was and its size. You can see right here she's feeling around for the hole.

And this is a quick shot of just how muddy the ground was.

This is the area where the water was coming out.

As I'm standing in the drained pool and going around the liner it took me about 5 seconds to realize just how bad the installation truly was. And you can notice how stained the liner is. She was duped into using a mineral system which stained her liner due to the fact the metals were so incredibly outrageously high. It turned a beautiful blue liner into this pale yukky gray color in only 2 weeks.

And I also noticed a slight tear in the liner which you can see right here.

If we stop right here we can see the part of the liner that ruptured.

Now you might be asking yourself, what caused this? How could a brand new liner rupture like this? Poor workmanship is to blame, but the installers missed one of the most important parts of above ground pool installation, and that's called adding a cove.

What's that?

Let's take a look at this diagram. We have the wall and floor in red. This curved area is called the cove. It means the installer needs to add 6" of dirt or fabricated cove all the way around the bottom of the pool. You see, if it's not installed, we have an open area at the 90 degree angle.

We can see here in the instructions from 2 different manufacturers just how important the cove it. As was mentioned, you can make your cove out of dirt or a buy a cove that will fit around the pool.

Why is this so important?

The cove is an area the liner sits on. It acts as a support. If a cove is not installed, as I said, there's an open area right here. Once the pool starts to fill with water, the liner will stretch to match that open area.

The size of this pool was 18k gallons which means there was about 147,600 lbs. of water in the pool. To put the into perspective, that equals about 25 full grown elephants, or 5 18 wheelers. That's alot of weight focused on one small area.

If you're planning on installing an above ground pool, make double sure a cove is properly installed.

So now you know the importance of installing a cove in your above ground pool, and a huge mistake to avoid.
