Live Editing Sessions - Capture One 12th August 2021 (HDR Recovery, Crop, Contrast, Brush, Grading)
We begin today's session looking at the challenges faced when we reduce too much contrast and have tools battling against each other: HDR sliders, contrast, levels and curves. Using Georg's "5 boats" shot, we look at the negative impact of squashing all the data in a shot to the middle of the histogram (midtones) through compounding tools on top of each other.
We recover the contrast in the shot and re-crop to provide some space around our subject.
From there, we look at an artistic interpretation of Jarle's shot of some trees in the forest. Using a mix of white balance, the colour balance tool (for grading) and some selective dodging and burning, we transform the scene from a flat capture to an atmospheric image.
At the mid-point of Jarle's edit, we break out for a quick guide to opacity and flow settings on the brush tool - more can be found in our "Pro Tips" session on the same.
Moving on to Eric's request to recover the sky in a panoramic stitch, we look at the challenges faced when dealing with flattened PNG outputs instead of raw data, and the limitations that produces. There are ways to make it "better", but not perfect, so for now it's a case of returning to the raw data to correct the overexposed areas.
Finally, we take a look at Lukas' cave shot - with shadow recovery (while keeping contrast) as well as some further colour grading, being careful not to affect the tone of the water too much in the process.

We recommend requesting the HD option in Chrome via YouTube for full 1440p screen captures.
A trimmed replay will be available in our Facebook Group and YouTube channel following the live stream. (But give those systems a couple of hours to publish the trimmed version!)

Recorded using Capture One Pro 21.3 on an Apple Mac Pro 16-core Xeon running Big Sur with 192GB memory, 2x Radeon Pro Vega II Graphics cards and 4TB SSD.
And don't forget, the discussion continues on our Behind The Scenes Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PaulReifferLive/
