Secrets & Tips for Staying in Budget Rooms (Should I upgrade?)

Life on the road seems to have changed in recent decades. Conditions all over the world, and particularly in Asia and South America, have improved dramatically. And with that, accommodation has gotten much better and more expensive everywhere. The cheap backpacker lodging with single rooms and shared bathrooms are harder and harder to find. And it's an open question now whether such places even make sense anymore. The few places I find like that simply aren't good value. Mid-level accommodation seems to be much better value now. You pay more, but you get MUCH more in return.

I was thinking about this in Tha Song Yang, because my room there was decidedly on the basic and budget side of the equation. Yet, with everything it was missing, it seemed overpriced. That got me thinking about and talking about some of the ways I've adapted to low budget rooms in my life.
