The Lives cannot be Saved by Knowledge: Satoko Oki at TEDxUTokyo

Based on the experience of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in her first year of high school, Satoko Oki aimed to engage in seismology and received her Ph.D at the Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo in 2006. Later, she became a Postdoctoral Fellow for Research Abroad of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the University of California, San Diego. At present, as Assistant Professor of Outreach and Public Relations Office at the Earthquake Research Institute, the University of Tokyo, Oki has been actively involved in outreach activities such as expressing and giving her opinions from a seismological view through various media.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event

「知識だけでは救えない命」大木 聖子
東京大学地震研究所助教
　高校1年生の時に起きた阪神・淡路大震災を機に地震学を志す。地震学で博士号を取得するも、それが直接的に死者をなくすことに役立っていないことを感じ、防災学に転向、2­008年より現職。「自然災害による『理不尽な死』を少しでも減らしたい」との志のもと地震学のアウトリーチ活動を精力的に行い、数々の出版や講演・出張授業を行う。 地震災害に関する知識が普及している日本においてもなお『理不尽な死』は起こってしまう。東日本大震災は、それを彼女につきつけた。
　なぜ『理不尽な死』はなくならないのか、それに対して科学者はどう行動していけば良いのか。自身の試みを紹介しながら彼女がTEDxUTokyoの舞台で語りかける。阪神­淡路大震災を機に地震学を志した彼女。どのようにしたら地震による「理不尽な死」を減らすことができるか、という問いに応えるため地震学を修めたが、研究の道にいるだけで­はそれは達成されないと考え、アウトリーチ活動に転向。今回の東日本大震災も、その問いを改めて突きつけられることとなったが、同時に彼女の目的を達成するための足掛かり­も見えた。それは子供への防災教育。彼女自身も子供へのアプローチを数多く実施しており、そこから見えてきたことをシェアする。
