Colouring Tutorial : How to Colour Skin Tone

This is one of those colouring tutorial requests that pops up again and again. So it's time to tackle how to colour skin tone. In this video I'll show you a very gentle layering pencil technique that allows you to build up light layers of colour on this portrait of Ivy. Whatever skin colour you want to create, be it a pale porcelain, a deep rich mocha or even a sun kissed honey - the technique is always the same - softly, softly and gradually build up those layers of colour!

And while I’m talking about faces, don’t forget to show us yours! I’ve launched a campaign to shine a spotlight on all the wonderfully talented people behind the colouring we see online. The colouring community is full of creative people but we never see you! Snap a photo of you AND your colouring and upload it to facebook, twitter or instagram using #showyourcolours or #showyourcolors OR upload it to the colouring gallery on my website. Let’s put some faces to these usernames and say hello to every who shares their colours online! I have some super cool creative projects that I’m launching in the coming weeks and we’ll be contacting members of the community to take part. The first one, the ‘Pass it On Colouring Book’ kicks off tomorrow! More to come soon!

This image was taken from my book, Ivy and the Inky Butterfly, a magical tale to colour.

Note: There's a point in this video at around 3mins where you see me dip a paint brush in water - ignore that! It was an editing mistake (I didn't use a paintbrush in this tutorial!) sorry!
