La vs. Là vs. L’a :
- ‘Là’ is used for directions and answers “where” (où) as in, “Doug est où?” “Doug est là.”.
- “L’a” can be found out by replacing the ‘a’ by ‘avait’, since it’s the verb ‘avoir’. If it works, then it’s “L’a”. For example, “Il l’a mangé.” “Il l’avait mangé.”
- If neither rule works, then it’s most likely ‘La’.
Se vs. Ce
- ‘Se’ can be replaced by other personal pronouns like ‘me’ or ‘te’, such as “Il se bouge.” “Il me/te bouge.”, while ‘Ce’ cannot
Sa vs. Ça
- Similar ‘Sa’ can be replaced by other possessive pronouns like ‘ma’ or ‘ta’, while ‘Ça’ can always be replaced by ‘Cela’.
C’est vs. S’est vs. Sait vs. Ces vs. Ses
- Both “C’est” and. “S’est” can be replaced by “C’était” and “S’était”, since it’s the verb ‘être’, however, only “C’est” can be replaced by ‘Ceci Est.’
- ‘Sait’ is the third person singular of the indicative of ‘savoir’, to know.
- ‘Ses’, again, can be replaced by ‘mes’ or ‘tes’ while ‘Ces’ can’t.
a vs. à
- As for “L’a”, ‘a’ can be replaced by ‘avait’, since it’s the verb ‘avoir’, while ‘a’ can’t.
