Macbeth - Derby Theatre - Rapid Review ★★★☆☆

Directed by Mark Babych, this version of the Shakespearean tragedy takes place amidst a dystopian futuristic warzone, with the witches reimagined as "Mad Max"-esque miscreants. Yet undrneath all this, there’s a much softer, tender tale being told, with the focus very much on the innocent lives caught up in Macbeth’s quest for power. There is a focus on children here - in particular, the death of the Macbeths' child. Beyond Lady Macbeth’s “I have given suck” speech, we get very little context from Shakespeare, so it is nice to see some of this backstory filled in here. This is a show that finds heart amidst to brutality and clearly demonstrates why Macbeth is considered one of Shakespeare’s best tragedies.
