Description of the Grand Canyon:

Located in northern Arizona, the Grand Canyon is known throughout the world for its huge size and stunning landscape. Measuring over 270 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep, the canyon’s walls contain rock layers that reveal a timeline of Earth’s history. It has been a locale for human use for millennia, with ruins and artifacts from inhabitants dating back nearly 12,000 years, In the early 1800s, expeditions sent by the U.S. government began to explore and map the canyon.

The Grand Canyon is estimated to be five to six million years old, and the three "Granite Gorges" found here contain crystalline rocks created during the Proterozoic Era. The rare existence of layered rock gives scientists a look into the area's history, dating back two million years.

Temperatures vary throughout the canyon, depending on elevation. During the North and South Rim are much cooler and more pleasant than inner canyon and the river, which can reach temperatures of 105-degrees-Fahrenheit. Thunderstorms persists throughout July, August and September. Conversely, winter weather tends to be extreme on the rims; the North Rim closes after the first heavy snow until mid-May. Spring and fall can be temperamental, and visitors should be prepared for sudden weather changes.

Between 4.5 million and five million people visit the park each year; summer is the park's busiest season.
