An update on the young Othawa male lion Junior

"Survivor.
Growing up in the wilds of the Sabi Sands is tough, the young Othawa male knows all to well the difficulties cubs face on the road to adulthood. Being the sole survivor of a litter of three, the youngest of the Majingilane bloodline and survived the Matimbas take over of the area, with a fair bit of luck.

However his story is far from over, he's now joining the females on hunts and entering a crucial stage in his development, learning the incredibly important hunting and ambush techniques that every lion has to know to survive adulthood. It's a race against time, the Matimba male grows weak from age the possibility of new males moving into the area becomes more likely with each passing day, he accepted the youngster, the next males that walk in won't."

*In March 2018, one of the two old Othawa lionesses gave birth to 3 male cubs. Their future looked bleak because in a span of two months (March-April 2018) the 3 Majingilane males died, leaving the cubs without fathers and protectors. Luckily for the Othawas, the young Othawa male acted like their protector, before testosterone and pressure from Matimba males made him leave and join the Mhangeni pride. The Othawa mother did her best to evade the Matimba males who were a threat to her cubs, with the help of her cub-less sister and young niece. It was a quite a surprise though when one day, the Matimbas were found with the Othawas, the cubs unharmed! Things seemed to be going well for the Othawa cubs until 2 of them had the misfortune of getting separated from their mother for almost a month. They starved to death. Junior was the only survivor and he is also the very first cub of the Othawa lioness to have reached this age. He is now 2 years old and with luck, he'll make it to maturity and leave the pride with his 2 nephews.
