Lions of Africa: Lolparpit & Olbarnoti (2005 - 2020) 2 males [Maasai Mara, Kenya]
Note: End of an Era: Maasai Mara's Iconic Lion Lolparpit
Lolparpit was born into the Ridge pride alongside his brother Olbarnoti in 2005 and Junior who was from a different mother. There were two other males born in the same pride; Cheza (2003) and Sala (2004).
Towards the end of 2007, Lolparpit, Olbarnoti, Junior, Cheza, and Sala took over the Ol Kiombo but only Sala, Cheza, and Junior were accepted by the females at the pride forcing Lolparpit and his brother Olbarnoti to move on.
As take overs go this was relatively easy as there were no pride males at the time. There were reports that at one time Notch and Grimace attempted a take over but 3 vs 2 they were run off. Cheza, Sala and Junior were a very strong coalition and no way they'd lose with numbers in their favor. Notch and the boys returned in force and Notch’s gang eventually took over the Ol Kiombo Pride.
Cheza, Sala and Junior stuck together and ended up with the Maji ya Fisi Pride. In early 2012 Junior was on his own one day while Cheza and Sala were patrolling the fringes of their old Ol Kiombo Pride. Junior was cornered by three of Notch’s gang and killed.
Subsequent to that, Notch’s gang killed seven of the cubs in the Maji ya Fisi Pride and over-powered Cheza and Sala. Cheza was killed but Sala escaped, was last seen heading towards Keekorok in the south east of the Mara but hasn’t been seen since.
In the course of 2008 Lolparpit and Olbarnoti took over a new pride who has settled down in the north western parts of the Olare Orok Conservancy, the Enkoyonai Pride. Mid of 2010 they chased off the 2 old Moniko Males (Mzee and Lolalai) and took over the Moniko Pride. Olbarnoti and Lolparpit controlled the entire Olare Orok Conservancy unti mid of 2011.
After having had several confrontations with the Double Crossing/Ridge Pride Males (Olchorre and Naengop) and after the Notches invaded the Double Crossing Area and the south western parts of Olare Orok Conservancy mid of 2011, Olbarnoti & Lolparpit gave up on the Enkoyonai Pride.
End of 2012 two other males took over the Double Crossing Pride, Mohican & Romeo II and a year later they also took over the Enkoyonai Pride and chased off Olchorre (after Naengop has vanished without trace). Mohican & Romeo II also tried to chase off Olbarnoti & Lolparpit, but the latter were too strong and holded on. In the first half of 2015 the 5 Rekero Males invaded the Double Crossing Area and the eastern parts of Olare Motorogi.They chased off Olbarnoti & Lolparpit and took over parts of the Moniko Pride. Olbarnoti & Lolparpit lost the other members of the Moniko Pride to 2 new young males in the course of 2016, hence they took over a spin off from the Enkoyonai Pride, the Oldikidiki Pride.
In 2017 Lolparpit and bro had a competition with Lipstick & Blackie trying to take over the Enkoyonai Pride after Mohican died and Romeo II vanished. Finally Lipstick and Blackie gave up.
In February 2019 the 3 newcomers known as Sala´s boys invaded their territory. They attacked Lolparpit when he was mating but in last sceond Olbarnoti arrived on the scene and saved his big brother.
Weeks later the sons of Blackie & Lipstick known as Kaka and Maridadi (Fig Tree males) cornered Lolparpit and injured him heavily.
Lolparpit survived those attacks and returned to his brother but his health was in a constantly fall.
One of Maasai Mara's most famous lion, Lolparpit (big hair), sent out his final roar on November 18, 2020, bringing an end to his 15-year-reign in the vast and iconic game reserve.
He died of natural causes with the body being discovered by a tour driver on the edges of Lolparpit's vast territory.
