Soil Pipe and Inspection Chamber install

Part 4 in this mini series, I talk through the plan of action for installing the entire foul drainage for the property. Whatever your architect has put on the plans may actually turn out quite differently in real life.

I found that 6m length underground drainage pipes probably aren't the best choice as they bend if you don't store them perfectly flat. Push fit connections are sometimes quite a pain to deal with even with plenty of lubrication! Anything over a 45 degree bend or a connection needs an inspection chamber, or at the very least a rodding point. I have inspection chambers coming out of my ears! I tended to use mostly 15 degree connections, a few 30 degree and a handful of variable angle connections. If you have 3 or more connections into an inspection chamber it's probably best to get one with adjustable angle inlets, this will likely cost less as you won't need as many variable angle connections just to make a turn of a couple of degrees.

In terms of backfill/bedding the pipes, I said a couple of inches (50mm) is better than the 140mm+ I had in one of my trenches. 100mm is probably what you should actually be aiming for, but it all depends on your ground conditions.

As some of the drains are at a shallow depth of less than 600mm, the building inspector may suggest covering the pipes in concrete/paving slabs to protect them. I would need to backfill with another 75mm on top of the pipe and then put the protection on top. We shall see...

Also if you're doing a DIY self build, I would recommend buying a mini digger. Unless you end up getting a blown engine it will work out cheaper in the long run.

Thanks for watching.
