*010 Dichterliebe: Vinogradov sings Schumann
Georgy Pavlovich Vinogradov (Георгий Павлович Виноградов) sings "When I Hear That Song", the tenth song of Robert Schumann's "Dichterliebe" (The Poet's Love), composed in 1840. The songs were originally a set of poems by Heinrich Heine, and here they are translated into Russian by G. Geyne and V. Argamakov. The recording was probably made in Moscow 1950-1951.

Potted wordage #10:
The prologue - not included in this song cycle - explains the situation as follows. It tells of the sorrowful knight that sits gloomily in his house all day, but by night is visited by his fairy bride, and dances with her until daylight returns him to his little poet's room. This song says: When I hear that song which my love once sang, my breast bursts with wild distress. Dark longing drives me to the forest hills, where my great misery pours out in tears.
Film commentary:
Dark longing personified.
Music commentary:
This one's about modulating (changing key) - or even better, to sound as if modulation is going on when it isn't, because the piano and the song never quite seem to be in the same key. When Bach does those lovely crunchy modulatory sections in the middle of fugues, he is always teasing you because you know where you are, key-wise, and you think he's just about to modulate home at last, then he takes another twist and turn. But this lied is not a classical joke. You always feel lost in this song because you never know where you are, and instead of feeliing deliciously crunchy, every slight dissonance is piquant and burning. The falling teardrops in the accompaniment bounce up suddenly off every lowest note, as if the mother earth has become painful to touch. Result: our poor knight is raining tears in Hell.
Film location:
Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Please be reassured that these songs are just songs, and that they bear no relation to any living individuals.
