Georgy Pavlovich Vinogradov (Георгий Павлович Виноградов) sings "On a Sunny Summer Morning", the twelfth song of Robert Schumann's "Dichterliebe" (The Poet's Love), composed in 1840. The songs were originally a set of poems by Heinrich Heine, and here they are translated into Russian by G. Geyne and V. Argamakov. The recording was probably made in Moscow 1950-1951.

The prologue - not included in this song cycle - explains the situation as follows. It tells of the sorrowful knight that sits gloomily in his house all day, but by night is visited by his fairy bride, and dances with her until daylight returns him to his little poet's room. This song says: On a sunny summer morning I went out into the garden; the flowers were talking and whispering, but I was silent. They looked at me with pity, and said, "Don't be cruel to our sister, you sad, death-pale man".

Film commentary:
The song says that the flowers are whispering about the poor knight's misfortune, i.e. he Is being watched and commented on. Today, talking flowers cannot be taken seriously, so the film gives the same atmos without the flowers.

Music commentary:
This is a musical illustration of the falling-away feeling of sadness, with the piano accompanying the singer and finally taking over. For a falling-feeling in the piano accompaniment, there are bright, high notes like glittering dewdrops, but triplets of quavers fall from each one like a little shower. In the song, most of the emphasized notes which fall on the beat are followed by shorter notes which are the same or lower. Where the song actually rises after the beat, it happens via discomfiting blue notes. Result: It's a slow waltz but the poor knight is not dancing.
