The Desire to Travel - Part 1 | How War Changed Travel Forever

Their program, “Strength through Joy,” introduced the idea of mass tourism, making trips accessible to a wide part of the population.

After the war, tourism in Germany changed again. By the mid-1950s, more West Germans were traveling than ever before. Vacations became not only a break from work, but also a sign of economic recovery and growing prosperity. Travel companies, hotels, and transportation all began to expand quickly to meet rising demand.

Today, holidays are part of everyday life in Germany. Almost three quarters of the population goes on holiday at least once a year. The travel industry is now a major part of the economy, creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and connecting Germany to the global tourism market.
