De SS "Statendam" was een cruiseschip dat in opdracht van de Holland-Amerika Lijn (HAL) op 29 januari 1919 door de werf Harland & Wolff te Belfast werd gebouwd. In 1922 werd de afbouw van het schip opgeschort wegens de staalcrisis in Engeland. In 1924 besloot de werf het casco zover klaar te maken zodat het op 11 september 1924 te water kon worden gelaten. Vervolgens heeft het casco tot 1927 aan de afbouwkade te Belfast gelegen zonder dat er aan werd gewerkt.

In 1927 besloot de N.V. Maildienst der Holland Amerika Lijn het casco over te laten slepen naar Nederland waar aan Wilton Fijenoord de opdracht werd gegeven om het schip af te bouwen, bouwnummer 612.

Op 20 april, gesleept door de slepers Roode Zee, Poolzee, Oostzee en Seine, brak bij Hoek van Holland de sleeptrosstopping waardoor de kapitein en 5 bemanningsleden gewond raakten. Het casco arriveerde in Schiedam en Wilton bouwde het schip af.

Op 4 april 1929 werd het schip tijdens de officiële proefvaart overgedragen aan de HAL. Aan boord bevonden zich ruim 300 gasten, waaronder ZKH prins Hendrik, zeven ministers van het eerste kabinet De Geer en burgemeester Patijn van Rotterdam. Beelden daarvan zijn in de film te zien.
Op haar eerste reis, die plaatsvond op 11 april 1929, voer de Statendam III naar New York. In de jaren daarna volgden nog vele transatlantische crossings en andere cruises plaats.

Op 24 november 1939 begon de “Statendam" aan haar laatste rondreis naar New York waarna het op Tweede Kerstdag weer in Rotterdam arriveerde. Het vertrek op 29 december werd geannuleerd en het schip werd opgelegd aan de Wilhelminakade.

Na de Duitse inval op 10 mei 1940 lag de "Statendam", samen met de "Boschdijk" en de "Veendam", aan de Wilhelminakade. De dag daarop hadden de Duitsers zich meester gemaakt van de "Statendam" en zich met mitrailleurs op het achterdek verschanst. Vervolgens ontstond er een hevig vuurgevecht met Nederlandse militairen waarbij de "Statendam" in brand werd geschoten. Deze film toont schaarse beelden van deze brand.

De "Statendam" heeft enige dagen in brand gestaan en was daarna total-loss. In augustus 1940 werd het uitgebrande casco verkocht aan de sloopwerf Frans Rijsdijk in Hendrik Ido Ambacht.

The SS "Statendam" was a cruise ship commissioned by the Holland-America Line (HAL) on 29 January 1919, built by the yard Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Ireland. In 1922 the further outfitting of the ship was suspended due to the steel crisis in England. In 1924 the yard decided to prepare the hull so that it could be launched on 11 September 1924.

After the German invasion on 10 May 1940, the "Statendam", together with the "Boschdijk" and the "Veendam", was still located on the Wilhelminakade. The next day the Germans had occupied the Statendam and entrenched themselves with machine guns on the quarterdeck. Then there was a fierce firefight with Dutch soldiers in which the "Statendam" caught fire. This film shows scarce images of this fire.

The "Statendam" was on fire for several days and was then a total loss. In August 1940 the burned-out hull was sold to the Frans Rijsdijk scrapyard in Hendrik Ido Ambacht.
