If the fluid contains sand, grit, or other abrasive particles, Tungsten Carbide is the preferred choice. It is tougher than Silicon Carbide and can handle high pressure and vibration without cracking. It is the heavy duty material for rugged environments.
𝟑. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞
This is the most common soft face material. It is self lubricating, means it can handle brief moments of dry running without immediately burning up. It is excellent for water and general chemicals but can be damaged by highly oxidizing fluids.

Choosing the wrong face material can lead to thermal cracking or chemical swelling. For example, using a standard carbon face with a highly corrosive acid would cause the face to disintegrate rapidly. Conversely, using two extremely hard faces like Silicon Carbide against Silicon Carbide is great for abrasives but requires very precise lubrication to prevent heat checking.

Ultimately, seal face material selection is about balancing hardness, heat conductivity, and chemical compatibility to ensure the pump remains leak free and reliable.
