In industrial pumps, seeing a few drops of fluid near the shaft might feel like a cause for alarm, but it is actually a normal part of operation. Mechanical seals are the primary defense against fluid escaping the pump casing, but they are not designed to be perfectly hermetic. In fact, a tiny amount of leakage is essential to keep the seal faces lubricated and cool.

When we talk about leakage limits, we typically look at what is considered acceptable versus what indicates a failure. For a standard mechanical seal, a typical leakage rate is roughly 3 to 5 milliliters per hour. To put that in perspective, that is just a few drops per minute.
However, the industry standard for testing and operation sets a specific threshold. During a performance test, a seal is generally expected to leak less than 10 grams per hour per seal. If you see a steady stream or a spray, the seal has moved beyond its operational limit and requires immediate attention.

The seal works by maintaining a microscopic film of fluid between two rotating faces. If this film becomes too thick, leakage increases. If it is too thin, the faces will rub together, generate heat, and eventually crack.
Key factors that push a seal past its limit include:
• High vibration can cause the seal faces to bounce or misalign.
• Sudden spikes in pressure can deform the seal components.
• If the pump runs without fluid, the seal faces will overheat and fail almost instantly.

Modern pumps often use secondary containment or sensors to monitor these limits. For hazardous fluids, we use "Plan 52" or "Plan 53" systems that catch leakage in a reservoir. If the fluid level in that reservoir rises too quickly, an alarm triggers, telling the operator that the seal has exceeded its limit.

Keeping an eye on these drops today prevents a major spill tomorrow. It is all about maintaining that delicate balance between lubrication and containment.
