How they killed Mavis – Thracian Greek Collection
Description:
Dimitra Ketetzoudi sings a traditional "trapiʑkó traɣúð'" (table song) from Asproneri, a village of the Marides group in the Evros district. In the local tradition, these songs usually have a slow melody and free rhythm to which there is no dancing. It was sung on many occasions, especially during meals at festivals and weddings. The song is about Mavis, a rich man, who was visited by three robber chiefs. He welcomed them and offered them a meal. When they revealed that they would abduct him, he ordered his two brides to give them their burlies, their bunch of coins. But this did not work. The chiefs ignored them, took Mavis and killed him. In the local tradition the burlia is a piece of jewellery, a bunch of coins which the young brides wore in their traditional costume. The melody of this song is also found in the region of Nigrita and Sochos in the tune "O Nikolas".
