STORY BEHIND THE PHOTO: Lt. Orris Keehr, South Saskatchewan Regiment, Oranje Canal, 12 April 1945
The South Saskatchewan Regiment fought a day-long battle to cross the Oranje Canal on 12 April 1945, trying to secure a passage for the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division to the city of Groningen. One man was killed and ten more wounded in an action considered too inconsequential to be included in the Army’s history after the war. A Canadian war photographer was on hand to record the fighting, and one photo in particular has gone on to be widely reproduced. In 2001, when surviving veterans of the regiment met to reminisce, they invited a group of reenactors to participate in their reunion. This video gives a brief discussion of the battle, the photo, the living historians who bore witness to the stories of the survivors, and the man whose image has been immortalized for all time.
