Blasting Into Hyper Speed on Kuala Lumpur's RapidKL Subway System

Subway systems can make or break a city. And Kuala Lumpur's RapidKL system, despite some quirks, is a great way to explore Malaysia's largest city. It's a mix of LRT (Light Rapid Transit), MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), and Monorail lines. Toss in a couple of regional trains on KTM commuter lines and some ERL (Express Rail Links) and a fleet of RapidKL buses, and the visitor has a lot of transportation choices - all of it pretty efficient and economical.

This mix of different systems does lead to some quirks and some awkward transfer points between stations, but overall, it hums along, and for a Morlock like me, it's perfect. I'm not a bus guy. I like to go deep underground and ride the subway trains.

In this video, I ramble around a bit of Chinatown near my hostel, explore some outdoor exhibits at the Muzium Negara, talk about some life lessons, and, finally, hit Kuala Lumpur's newest MRT line - the Sungai Buloh-Kajang line - for an above-ground ride to see some of northern Kuala Lumpur zipping by from the wide front window.

Public works like this massive Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT line never fail to amaze me. As human achievements go, they're remarkable. And yet, we tend to take them for granted. Taking some time to just ride on the train and marvel at it all is a fun way to spend a coupl hours in Kuala Lumpur.
