Merdeka! Crash Course in Malaysian History at the Muzium Negara in Kuala Lumpur
The Muzium Negara is the national museum of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. Constructed in 1963, it tells the story of Malaysia from the paleolithic and neolithic ages through the era of the Malay kingdoms (with a particular focus on Malacca), on into the colonial period as the Portuguese, Dutch, and British fought for control of the Malay peninsula and the Malacca strait, and goes right up to the struggle for independence (Merdeka!) and the birth of a modern industrial nation and economic powerhouse in Southeast Asia.
Okay, that's a mouthful. But I love museums of all kinds, and I hoped the Muzium Negara would at least give me a basic grounding in Malaysian history, so I can better understand the modern country and what I see around me on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. And the museum did exactly that. It offers a great introduction to Malaysia, and it is great value at 5 ringgit.
Cameras are allowed inside, which is nice, so I was able to capture some video of the 4 different galleries. (Well, 3 of them. My camera failed me in Gallery D.) The museum is also very easy to get to now that the Sungai-Buloh-Kajang MRT line is open. Depending on your starting point, you could just go to KL Sentral and then walk through the connecting tunnels to Muzium Negara, or ride directly on the SBK line to the subway stop of the same name: Muzium Negara.
Finally, if you want some help sorting through the exhibits and making sense of it all, show up before 10 a.m. for a free guided tour in English. I was too late for that, but I heard that it is very good.
