Duelling Civil War cannons, Full military loads, 1000 yards, Grayling, MI, 2012
2012 1000 Yard Bacon Creek Rifled Artillery competition between the two most competitive artillery teams in the Historic Artillery Matches, the First Maryland Cavalry (Tim Scanlan gunner) on target 1 and 3rd US Artillery (John Wells gunner) on target 2. Once a year, the Camp Grayling National Guard Base opens it's range to the Historic Artillery Long range match. On day two of this match, there is a money match at 1000 yards. Cannons all use original sights, original style projectiles, and full military loads. Targets are 4' x 6', but hits don't count unless they are fully inside a 16" x 24" piece of Civil War newspaper. History: the original Loomis Battery, Michigan Light artillery, U S Civil War, reported that they had gunnery practice at 1000 yards at a sheet of newspaper. this match was held at Bacon Creek, Kentucky. The Bacon Creek match at Camp Grayling commemorates that. Entrants pay a fee to participate, and if one team puts 3 shots totally inside the paper, they take home the money. Otherwise it rolls over to the next year. At the time of this match (2012), the pot was $1800 dollars. This year, 2015, the pot had risen to almost $2200, and was won by one of the contestants in the match you will see. Camera footage was taken with 105X Zoom. You can see the mirage and wind effects, but you can also see the 10 lb projectiles blasting through the targets, throwing up clouds of dirt, and riccochetting out through the the impact area of the range. Our Bacon Creek Match commemorates that historic activity. Shooters must place 3 shots totally inside the 16" x 24" paper at 1000 yards or the prize money rolls over to the next year. At the time of this match, the prize was up to $1800. No one won, so by 2015, the prize was almost $2200!. (One of these 2012 teams won this year (2015), but the other was unable to attend, so who knows what might have happened with competition this close!!) Teams are pictured around their guns at the start of the video, then the camera focuses on the drama at the targets. See the shells punch through the thousand yard targets, watch the dirt fly, and see the shells riccochet away from the impact area! (Videographer Marylou Wells)
