There Were 62! Kids In This Family

This 1950s news report that ran in the movie theaters at that time. It presents a family with 62 adopted children. In my lifetime, a family famous for a large number of children were the Duggar family with 19 children, which is still an exceptionally large number by modern standards. The Duggar family, with 19 biological children, is among the most well-known large families in recent history.

In terms of the largest American family, historically, some religious or polygamous families have had very large numbers of children, but verifying specific numbers can be challenging. The Duggar family is often cited due to their media presence and the reality TV show "19 Kids and Counting."

Then there is the remarkable story of Bertha Holt, co-founder of Holt International Children's Services. Bertha Holt and her husband Harry Holt were instrumental in the international adoption movement and facilitated the adoption of many children, but they themselves did not have 62 children.

The record for the largest number of adopted children in a single family in the USA is held by Jeane and Paul Briggs from West Virginia. They have adopted 29 children from different countries, many of whom have special needs. The Briggs family has been widely recognized for their commitment to providing a loving and supportive home for children in need.

The record for the largest number of children born to one mother is held by Feodor Vassilyev's first wife, who lived in Russia in the 18th century, and reportedly gave birth to 69 children.
